Description

Succulent Texas meatballs bring bold southwestern flavors to dinner tables with zesty seasonings and hearty beef. Rich spices and smoky notes create a mouthwatering experience you’ll crave again and again.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat:

  • 1 kilogram lean beef mince
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 200 grams cheddar cheese, grated

Sauce Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 whole onion, chopped
  • 8 whole garlic cloves
  • 2 whole red peppers
  • 6 fresh tomatoes
  • 1 x 400 grams can chopped tomatoes
  • 400 milliliters strong coffee
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons black treacle
  • 100 milliliters ketchup
  • 4 tablespoons vinegar or 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 whole red chilli

Spices and Additional Ingredients:

  • 1 whole red chilli
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 x 400 grams can kidney beans

Instructions

  1. Caramelize chopped onions, minced garlic, and diced peppers in a sizzling skillet with oil until fragrant and softened.
  2. Pour in crushed tomatoes, brewed coffee, black beans, aromatic spices, and splash of vinegar. Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld together.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, whisked eggs, and tangy mustard. Gently form uniform meatballs, ensuring consistent size for even cooking.
  4. Remove star anise from the simmering sauce and taste, adjusting seasoning as needed with salt and pepper.
  5. Carefully nestle prepared meatballs into the sauce, allowing them to cook slowly for 10 minutes until fully cooked through and absorbing the rich sauce flavors.
  6. Preheat broiler to high heat. Generously sprinkle shredded cheese over the meatballs and sauce.
  7. Transfer skillet to the broiler and cook for 2-3 minutes until cheese melts completely and develops a golden, bubbly crust.
  8. Serve immediately while hot, with crusty bread or over rice to soak up the delicious sauce.

Notes

  • Select high-quality ground beef with a balanced fat content to ensure juicy, flavorful meatballs that won’t dry out during cooking.
  • Toast breadcrumbs briefly before mixing to enhance their nutty flavor and improve the overall texture of the meatballs.
  • Use freshly ground coffee or espresso powder for a deeper, more complex flavor profile in the sauce that complements the meat.
  • Consider gluten-free alternatives like almond flour or gluten-free breadcrumbs to make the recipe suitable for those with dietary restrictions.
