Description

Delightful Homemade Flapjacks deliver a classic British treat with golden oats and sweet honey. Crisp edges and chewy centers make these irresistible snacks perfect for afternoon tea or quick energy boosts.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 5 ounces (142 grams) porridge oats
  • 4 ounces (113 grams) butter or margarine

Sweeteners:

  • 2 ounces (57 grams) demerara sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30 milliliters) golden syrup

Binding Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce (28 grams) plain flour

Instructions

  1. Gently melt butter, sugar, and golden syrup in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring carefully to create a smooth, golden liquid without allowing it to bubble.
  2. Remove pan from heat and immediately incorporate oats and flour, stirring thoroughly to ensure every oat is evenly coated and glistening.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a prepared 8-inch square baking tin, using the back of a spoon to compress and distribute the mixture uniformly and firmly.
  4. Place the tin in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) and bake for 15-20 minutes, watching carefully to achieve a pale golden color without over-browning.
  5. Allow the flapjacks to cool completely within the tin, ensuring they set properly before carefully cutting into 12 precise, even squares.

Notes

  • Gently melt ingredients to avoid burning or caramelizing the sugar, which can make the flapjacks taste bitter.
  • Use a low heat and stir constantly to create a smooth, even mixture that coats the oats perfectly.
  • For gluten-free version, replace regular flour with ground almonds or gluten-free oat flour to maintain the classic texture.
  • Add extra flavor by mixing in dried fruits like cranberries or chopped nuts before baking for a personalized twist on the traditional recipe.
