Description

Southern comfort meets hearty breakfast in this Biscuits & Gravy Casserole, blending creamy sausage gravy with flaky biscuit layers. Comfort cuisine reaches new heights, promising a satisfying morning meal you’ll crave again and again.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein:

  • 1 lb ground breakfast sausage
  • 6 large eggs

Bread & Base:

  • 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Gravy & Seasoning:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and thoroughly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Crumble and brown the ground breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until completely cooked and no pink remains, approximately 8-10 minutes.
  3. Drain excess grease from the sausage, then transfer the meat to a separate plate and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, whisk flour into the remaining sausage drippings to create a roux, stirring continuously for 1-2 minutes to eliminate raw flour taste.
  5. Gradually pour whole milk into the roux, whisking constantly to prevent lumps and create a smooth gravy base.
  6. Season the gravy with black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and dried thyme, stirring until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 3-4 minutes.
  7. Cut each refrigerated biscuit into quarters and layer half of them across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  8. Sprinkle half of the cooked sausage and half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the biscuit layer.
  9. Crack eggs evenly across the surface, ensuring they are distributed throughout the casserole.
  10. Pour the prepared gravy over the entire casserole, making sure to cover all ingredients.
  11. Top with remaining biscuit quarters, sausage, and cheese.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until eggs are set and the top is golden brown and crispy.
  13. Remove from oven and let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and casserole to set.

Notes

  • Swap ground sausage with turkey or plant-based sausage for a lighter, healthier alternative that still packs incredible flavor.
  • Reduce carbohydrate content by using low-carb biscuit substitutes like almond flour biscuits or cloud bread for gluten-sensitive individuals.
  • Elevate the dish’s nutritional profile by incorporating diced bell peppers, spinach, or mushrooms into the sausage layer for added vitamins and texture.
  • Control sodium levels by using low-sodium sausage and reducing added salt, making this hearty breakfast more heart-friendly without compromising taste.
